Call for Papers: UKCLA Early Career Workshop in Constitutional Law and Theory, University of Bristol

Bristol University’s Centre for European and Public Law (CEPL), and Liverpool University’s Public Law Unit are pleased to announce a one-day workshop for PhD candidates and early-career researchers working in constitutional law and theory.

This workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to present their research, receive constructive feedback from established scholars, and engage in discussions on current developments in the field. The workshop is jointly organised by the Liverpool Public Law Unit and Bristol Law School and is generously funded by both CEPL and the UK Constitutional Law Association (UKCLA). This year’s workshop follows several successful events, including in Liverpool in (2016, 2019, 2025), Strathclyde (2018), Sheffield (2020), and Bristol (2024).

The workshop will take place at the University of Bristol, School of Law, on 10th June 2026. Participants will present their work before an assembled panel of experts who will provide immediate feedback on their research. The panel will include:

· Hayley Hooper (Associate Professor of Law, University of Oxford)

· Gavin Phillipson (Professor of Law, University of Bristol)

· Adam Tucker (Senior Lecturer in Law, University of Liverpool)

We welcome submissions from PhD candidates at any stage of their research and early-career scholars within five years of completing their PhD. Papers on all aspects of public law and constitutional theory are encouraged, including but not limited to, constitutional law, administrative law, human rights, legal theory, and comparative public law. This can include scholars who are outside the discipline of law, but whose work is relevant to questions of public law.

The event will be free to attend, and lunch will be provided. There will also be the option of a partially-subsidised evening meal for the presenters and panellists available for an extra fee.
